Why you should never get a family dome tent - RANT

Family dome failing

Shelter is one of the most basic of human needs but I still see people everywhere thinking that you can buy a cheap family sized dome tent and think it will work as adequate shelter. Instead what you get is a big sail that's not waterproof and likes to fold flat with any level of wind.

I've also noticed a disturbing trend in the last number of years with family campers in Australia during summer. They cover their tent in at least 1, usually more tarps to keep them waterproof. Not only adding to the set up time, but putting extra pressure on that already stressed out cheap fibreglass tent poles.

These so called shelters also take forever to set up compared to most other tents. You need to feed poles through loops, hooks and guy out every conceivable pole intersection and use 18 or more pegs.

If you want to camp, buy a decent tent. A good hiking tent, or a family size canvas tent. Forget those budget large family dome tents unless you want to end up like this photo in the middle of the night. Which isn't a great way to get your family convinced that camping is good fun.

The poor people in this photo were having their very first camping experience and bought this tent. No doubt some expert from an large family camping store suggested it would have great space and be easy to set up!

Gday! i have two 6 metre by three metre black wolf family dome tents. they have both protected us from near gale force conditions. mind you, they are not cheap, we stabilise them with guy ropes. the flies are impervious, and have survived 24 hours of constant torrential rain without a drop inside. Moral of the story is - you get what you pay for!

We camped near Thredbo (Ngarigo Campground), in a beautiful valley on the Thredbo River during the Jazz and Blues Festival. Amused ourselves one day watching the newcomers set up camp and head off to the festival early next morning. About two hours later - huge wind storm came through up ended everything of ours but split their dome tent, in two. not much you could do but put all their stuff back under their tarp and pack up and come home!

That was the camp we almost toasted the Turbo Tent Lite by exploding a light plugged into a battery but at least the wind didn't blow it over. Also the last time we camped in the Turbo Tent and upgraded to Southern Cross Canvas.

Camped at Crowdy Bay National Park with the Southern Cross. Within 5 minutes of putting the tent up, 4 trees were down around us, one windscreen broken, couple of camps destroyed. One was a good quality 2 room cabin tent which folded in on itself because the tent pegs were pulled out by the enormous gust. Both cheap dome tents and expensive camper trailers weathered the storm. Tarps seemed to be the worst off as they blew wildly. Maybe better tent pegs would have helped secure the tent, but the cheap ones did last the distance.
