Trying trail runners instead of hiking boots

Innov-8 Flyroc 310

Recently I've been looking for the perfect hiking shoe to add to my hiking boots. As with all outdoor adventure gear no one piece of kit is perfect for all situations.

It seemed a pair of trail running shoes that I could use on day walks through to light and fast week long walking explorations fit my needs. Thanks to a post from Martin Rye I bought a pair of Innov-8 Flyroc 310's.

So far I've only used them on a short day hike. So far I'm very pleased with my choice. A full review will come later when I know the shoes more. Here's what I've initially been thinking and asking.

Would I have enough ankle support?

Those that support trail runners say that not having ankle support allows your ankles to actually get stronger and then you don't need the support. My initial walk was very comfortable however I have yet to try them with an overnight weight on my back.

Would my feet get too wet?

I choose not to get the Gore-Tex lined hiking shoes so that my feet could breath better and to keep then shoes as light as possible. Personally I'd like it if the innov-8's had eVENT rather than Gore-Tex for the great breathability.

How will they last

I'm used to wearing full leather hiking boots like Scarpa's so I'm very interested to see how these last over time. The lightweight material could easily get ripped or rubbed. However these are far cheaper than heavy expensive leather hiking boots.

I use to think about ankle support a lot. I use to ask why those fell runners running past me on rocky mountain summits could do so in running shoes. I looked at Ryan Jordon's account of his Arctic 1000 walk - in trail shoes in terrain harsher than Scotland. I saw other UK backpackers using them. Many questions and thoughts went through my mind. The answer is the best ankle support is to let the foot act as it was intended to do. Trail shoes do that. Good choice and as Samh said to me "Enjoy" PS I wrote about why I use trail shoes at: http://summitandvalley.blogspot.com/2008/06/bad-ankle-and-inov-8-318gtx....
